NUMBERS ARE TRENDING UP

This is incredibly sad and not what we were hoping to see for the 2024 year.  According to the NHTSA and the NSC, there were 400,000 injuries and 44,680 fatalities in the Unites States, due to distracted driving. 


While teens have equated to a higher percentage in connection to causing accidents due to distracted driving in the recent past the data released for 2024 shows that 42% of distracted driving accidents are caused by someone between the ages of 20 and 39.


The following states have seen an INCREASE in distracted driving caused accidents: Maine +38*% , California +34% , Alaska +23% , Oklahoma +21% , Minnesota +14% , New Jersey +12% , D. C + 11%

Final data on fatalities caused by distracted driving is not yet out but preliminary numbers suggest that approximately 96 fatalities were tied to distracted driving accidents in the state of Alabama. The data that is out also shows that the numbers for 2024 have dropped by 7% suggesting that the "DON'T TOUCH LAW" in effect may have been a positive change in a decline. While Pedestrian fatality numbers have sky rocketed in the state of Alaska, the numbers for fatalities are low compared to the rest of the United States. The final numbers of deaths connected to distracted driving in Alaska is 4. However, one person is still too many.

The numbers of fatalities differs depending on data sites. Some statistics include impaired drivers. If you include Impaired drivers of varying degrees causing distracted accidents, there were 823 fatalities in 2024. The final number in 2024 for fatalities directly linked to distracted driving is : 57

The state of Colorado data shows 268 injury or  fatal accidents in 2024 with 98 of those being linked to distracted driving However, preliminary data shows that there were approximately 111 fatalities due to distracted driving in 2024. Stay tuned for finalized numbers for 2024.

Connecticut data from Connecticut department of transportation 328 fatalities in 2024 however because of the complexities in the data collected there are a couple different numbers floating around regarding how many of the 328 are related to distracted driving. Although we are still waiting on the finalized numbers for last year, data is already rolling out for 2025, stating that 21% of the accidents that have happened so far, are directly linked to distracted driving.

Finalized numbers for the state of Georgia are not yet out. The preliminary numbers for 2024 fatalities due to distracted driving are: 133. In the state of Georgia, the age group linked to fatalities due to distracted driving are those 20 years of age and younger.

The Hawaii state transportation site shows that there were approximately 102 traffic fatalities in 2024 with 37 of those being linked to distracted driving.

The Idaho State transportation website as well as AAA reports data is showing that 49 people were killed in relation to distracted driving accidents in 2024.

Illinois saw 122 fatalities in 2024, due to distracted driving. While fatalities due to distracted driving seem to possibly be on the decline in this state, pedestrian fatalities are rising at a concerning rate.

The state of Indiana reports 17,000 crashes that resulted in 230 fatalities linked to distracted driving, according to state officials.

Iowa saw 351 fatalities linked to distracted driving which is a slight decrease from 2023 where 378 were reported.

According to  KDOT, in 2024 KDOT reported 70 deaths and 350 serious injuries due to distracted driving.

In 2024 Louisiana reports 180 fatalities and an additional 1,296 serious injuries via CARTS at LSU.

Per Main DOT the statistics for 2024 are a little messy and listed by percentages. They are as follows. 52% of the accidents were fatal. 17% had minor to severe injury. 43% were caused by unknown distracted. 6.25% were not caused by distraction. 6% were caused by talking, eating distraction. 18.75% happened while subject was outside of their vehicle. 6.25% happened while using a hands free device. 6.25% Distracted by unknown cause. 81.25% of these accidents happened by a male driver and 18.75% were female.

2024 shows that there were 443 fatal crashes with distracted driving accident information not yet released. The Maryland Highway Safety Association reports they see an average of 185 fatalities yearly linked to distracted driving.

Numbers for 2024 are not yet released. However, according to Mass IMACT crash portal, there were more than 17,000 crashes due to distracted driving with 5,100 of these crashes resulting in serious injuries.

However, there is information released that states that in 2022 MI had 15,441 crashes involving distracted drivers. 5,905 resulted in mild to serious injuries and 57 fatalities. CMT (Cambridge mobile telematics) shares that there is a 12% reduction since the hands free law was implemented in the state of Michigan. Still texting and driving remains a huge issue. Michigan PD data shows a 2% decrease in distracted driving related crashes in 2024.

2024 numbers for Minnesota shows that there were 29 fatalities and 137 serious injuries attributed to distracted driving accidents.

Fatalities  decreased 3% in 2024 compared to 2023 with 685 fatalities. Distracted Driving is the leading cause. 2024 early data shows that 12% of Distracted Driving fatalities and injuries occur on the I-55 which is a decrease from 2023 where it sat at 16%.

Pedestrian deaths top Distracted Driving fatalities in Missouri for 2024. While there are no numbers available yet for 2024, data shows that there were approximately 100 Distracted Driving fatalities in the first 6 months of both 2023 and 2024.

There were 204 traffic related deaths in 2024 however there is no data numbers specified in the numbers of distracted driving accidents. The information that I was able to pull showed that in 2024 there were 17 deaths attributed to distracted driving and that represents approximately 8.67% of the fatalities being attributed to distracted driving.

2024 data available is extremely limited and shows a significant increase in traffic fatalities. A 5% rise with 135 fatalities. There are no connections showing that the 135 fatalities were attributed to distracted driving but reports read showed that distracted driving is still a rising concern in New Hampshire with distracted driving and speeding to be the leading cause of accidents.

Distracted driving is a significant factor showing that in 2024 26.72% of accidents were caused by distracted driving with 183 fatalities attributed by distracted driving. New Jersey is at a 30 year high with accidents specifically caused by distracted drivers.

New Mexico is one of the highest in the nation for distracted driving accidents and fatalities. 41% of all accidents that happen in NM are caused by distracted drivers. In 2024 there were approximately 284 fatalities attributed to distracted driving.

New York saw a 8.6% DECREASE in 2024 from 2023. In 2024 NY saw 105,000 crashes with 480 fatalities. 32% of the fatalities were attributed to distracted driving crashes.

2024 shows that there were 850 distracted driving related crashes attributing to 2 fatalities and 35 serious injuries. Vision zero is an organization in North Dakota focused on traffic safety reports that distracted driving deaths are increasing in North Dakota.

Ohio reports that there were 8,571 distracted driving related accidents in 2024 with 29 fatalities and 4,458 mild to serious injuries.

Rhode Island WINS this year with ZERO Distracted Driving fatalities due to the strict laws in place. However, some reports show that on average drivers are spending 2 minutes of phone usage per hour of driving time.

In 2024 there was one distracted driving accident every 42 minutes. One site shows that every 1 in 4 crash in the state of TN is a distracted driving attributed accident. Fatalities due to distracted driving in 2024 have not yet been released but reports show that from 2020- 2024 there were 361 distracted driving fatalities.

The number from 2023 have decreased with 91,000 crashes in 2024 with a high percentage of them being attributed to distracted driving. There were 370 fatalities due to distracted driving crashes.

Washington is seeing an increase from 2023. In the 2024 there was 138 distracted driving attributed fatalities per the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

There is no specific information out yet for 2024. However, Chesapeake Police Department made a social media post reporting that there were 73 fatalities in 2024 in relation to distracted driving.

2024 data shows that there were 44 fatalities resulting from 9,068 distracted driving crashes with an additional 3,530 mild to severe injuries. State Patrol reports that 3,083 were injured from reckless driving.

In 2024 there is a 25% decrease from previous years. Wyoming Dept. of Transportation listed 107 fatalities from crashes - 5 being attributed to distracted driving.
